Why Sexual Health Matters for Your Relationship, and How We Can Help

Reigniting Intimacy: How Addyi, PT-141, and Couples Counseling Can Help You Reconnect

If your desire for intimacy has faded and it bothers you, you are not alone. Low sexual desire is one of the most common concerns women bring up in wellness visits, and it is also one of the least talked about. Many women quietly assume it is just part of getting older, a busy season of life, or something they have to live with. The truth is that low libido often has real, identifiable causes, and there are real, evidence-based options to address it.

At Innovative Wellness and Weight Center, we believe sexual health is health. It deserves the same attention, compassion, and medical care as your hormones, your weight, and your heart.

Why sexual health matters for couples

Physical intimacy is about far more than the moment itself. Research consistently links a healthy intimate connection with lower stress, better sleep, improved mood, and a stronger sense of closeness between partners. Intimacy releases oxytocin, often called the bonding hormone, which helps couples feel connected, secure, and supported.

When desire fades for one partner, it can quietly strain the relationship. The partner with lower desire may feel guilt or pressure. The other partner may feel rejected or unwanted.

Over time, couples can drift into a pattern of avoidance, and the emotional distance grows. Addressing sexual health is not just about restoring desire. It is about protecting the connection at the heart of your relationship.

Understanding hypoactive sexual desire disorder

When low desire is persistent, distressing, and not explained by another medical condition, medication, or relationship issue, it may be diagnosed as hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD. HSDD is a recognized medical condition, not a character flaw and not something you simply have to accept.

For premenopausal women with HSDD, there are FDA-approved treatment options, and we are proud to offer them at our practice.

Addyi: the daily option

Addyi, also known by its generic name flibanserin, is an FDA-approved oral medication for acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. It is taken once daily at bedtime and works on brain chemistry involved in sexual desire, rather than on hormones. Because it works gradually, many women notice changes over several weeks of consistent use.

Addyi is not right for everyone. It carries an important warning about alcohol use close to the time of dosing and should not be used by women with liver problems or those taking certain medications, because of the risk of low blood pressure and fainting. This is exactly why treatment starts with a thorough consultation, so we can review your health history and determine whether Addyi is a safe and appropriate fit for you.

PT-141: the as-needed option

PT-141, known generically as bremelanotide, takes a different approach. Rather than daily dosing, it is used on demand, taken before anticipated intimacy. The FDA-approved form, marketed as Vyleesi, is a self-administered injection approved for acquired, generalized HSDD in premenopausal women. PT-141 works through melanocortin receptors in the brain that play a role in sexual desire and arousal.

Like any medication, PT-141 has potential side effects, most commonly nausea, flushing, and headache, and it may cause a temporary rise in blood pressure, so it is not appropriate for women with uncontrolled hypertension or cardiovascular disease. Again, a personalized evaluation comes first, so we can make sure any option we recommend is right for your body and your health history.

Medication is one piece. Connection is another.

Desire does not live in a vacuum. Stress, resentment, poor communication, and years of unspoken frustration can dampen intimacy just as powerfully as any biological cause. That is why we also offer romance and couples counseling at our practice.

Counseling gives couples a safe, judgment-free space to talk about intimacy, rebuild communication, and reconnect emotionally. For many couples, the best results come from combining approaches: addressing the biological side with an appropriate medical option while strengthening the emotional connection through counseling. Treating the whole relationship, not just the symptom, is what sets real, lasting change apart.

What to expect at your visit

Your journey starts with a confidential consultation. We will talk about your symptoms, your health history, your relationship, and your goals. Together, we will rule out other contributors to low desire, such as thyroid issues, hormone imbalances, medications, or untreated mood concerns, and then build a plan tailored to you. That plan may include Addyi, PT-141, couples counseling, hormone evaluation, or a combination, depending on what your body and your relationship need.

You deserve to feel desire, closeness, and joy in your relationship again.

If low libido has been weighing on you or creating distance between you and your partner, we invite you to reach out. Heather Pavlinsky, CRNP, and the team at Innovative Wellness and Weight Center are proud to help women and couples throughout Westmoreland County reclaim their intimacy and their connection.
